IMPORTANT FAQs

Why is the Applied Data Science Lab getting relaunched?

When the Applied Data Science Lab launched, it was WorldQuant University's only Lab and applied certificate. In the years since, the rapid rise of artificial intelligence has fundamentally reshaped industries and elevated data science from a specialized skill to an essential foundation — particularly for those preparing to advance into deep learning and AI-driven fields. Our portfolio has grown to reflect this reality, offering a broader range of Labs designed to build the knowledge and hands-on experience learners need at every stage of that journey. Because every Lab we offer follows the same project-based, self-paced, applied format, the word "applied" no longer needs to be part of any individual Lab's name. It's a given. To reflect this, we're updating our naming conventions so learners can more easily understand how each Lab fits within their broader learning pathway.

How does the updated Data Science Lab curriculum compare to the old version?

The updated Data Science Lab builds on the same project-based foundation as the previous version, with each module still anchored in a real-world project using real data, while introducing meaningful improvements in depth and student experience. The revised curriculum places greater emphasis on professional data pipelines and incorporates modern libraries such as DuckDB for more efficient data handling. It has also been designed with the full track in mind, ensuring seamless integration with the other Labs and a more coherent learning journey overall.

Can I transfer from the Applied Data Science Lab to the new Data Science Lab?

No. You can either complete the Applied Data Science Lab to earn your credential and then enroll in the new Data Science Lab if you’d like or you can withdraw from the Applied Data Science Lab and start over in the new Data Science Lab. Your Project progress will not be transferred because the curriculum has changed and projects are not equivalent to each other.

Who can apply?

The new Data Science Lab is open to all qualified applicants including new and existing WQU students.
