What is the Graduate Certificate in Applied AI Fundamentals about?
The Graduate Certificate in Applied AI Fundamentals is a free, 15-credit, graduate-level program that equips professionals with the systems thinking, analytical frameworks, and applied AI skills to anticipate disruption, assess how risks cascade across interconnected systems, and respond with confidence. Across five online courses, learners gain practical experience using data, dashboards, and scenario-based analysis through globally relevant case studies spanning public health, finance, supply chains, energy, agriculture, and urban mobility — building the decision-making capability and competitive edge to lead through complexity across industries and professional contexts.
How is the Graduate Certificate in Applied AI Fundamentals structured?
The certificate comprises five graduate-level courses, each seven weeks long, for a total of 15 graduate semester credits. The courses are taught in a prescribed sequence, with each building directly on the last. Students should plan to dedicate 18-20 hours per course. Students can choose from two options through the course registration process.

Option 2: Courses can be taken one at a time in their prescribed sequence.
Courses 1–4 are prerequisites for the final course on ethical AI leadership.
How long does it take to complete the Graduate Certificate in Applied AI Fundamentals?
If you take one course at a time, the standard completion time is approximately 12 months. Learners who take courses 1 and 2 and then courses 3 and 4 in parallel can earn their certificate in as few as six months. The maximum time frame permitted to complete the program is 1.5 years.

Can the Graduate Certificate in Applied AI Fundamentals lead further study?
Yes. The certificate is designed as both a standalone credential and a foundation for continued graduate study in WQU's MSc in Strategic AI and Innovation.
Can I take the Graduate Certificate in Applied AI Fundamentals and the MSc in Financial Engineering program at the same time?
No. Accrediting bodies have strict rules about how credit hours are defined, assigned, and overseen. When a student is enrolled in two separate for-credit programs simultaneously, it creates conflicts in how those credit hours are governed and attributed. Institutions cannot properly comply with accreditation requirements in that scenario. However, it is possible to take a for-credit program like the Applied AI Fundamentals certificate and a (not-for-credit) Lab at the same time.
What is the relationship between the Graduate Certificate in Applied AI Fundamentals and the MSc in Strategic AI and Innovation?
The Graduate Certificate in Applied AI Fundamentals and the MSc in Strategic AI and Innovation form a stackable learning pathway. The Graduate Certificate builds a foundation in applied AI, data, and systems thinking. The MSc builds on that foundation to develop strategic decision-making for complex organizational challenges. You can complete the Certificate as a standalone credential or continue into the MSc.
Can I apply directly to the MSc in Strategic AI and Innovation without completing the Graduate Certificate in Applied AI Fundamentals first?
No. Admission follows a set sequence: you apply to and complete the Graduate Certificate in Applied AI Fundamentals first. Certificate graduates can then apply to the MSc in Strategic AI and Innovation.
What does "stackable" mean in the context of the Graduate Certificate in Applied AI Fundamentals and the MSc in Strategic AI and Innovation?
“Stackable” means the Graduate Certificate in Applied AI Fundamentals is a complete, independent credential that also counts as the first stage of the MSc in Strategic AI and Innovation if you choose to continue. This is different from an embedded certificate, which exists only within a degree program and cannot be earned on its own.
Do I have to complete the MSc after finishing the Certificate?
No. The Certificate stands on its own as a graduate credential. Completing it does not obligate you to continue, but it does position you to apply to the MSc through a streamlined process if you decide to.
Do I need prior AI or coding experience?
No. Both the Graduate Certificate in Applied AI Fundamentals and the MSc in Strategic AI and Innovation are designed for professionals from technical and non-technical backgrounds. No prior AI or coding experience is required.
How is AI used in the Graduate Certificate in Applied AI Fundamentals and the MSc in Strategic AI and Innovation?
In both programs, AI is a tool for analysis and decision-making. Learners work with AI-powered tools and interactive dashboards rather than building models or writing code, so no prior AI or coding experience is required.
In the Certificate, AI powers the analysis that helps learners understand how disruption spreads across interconnected systems. Learners use AI-driven tools to trace cascading risks, map vulnerabilities, and see how key indicators respond to changing conditions, then apply those insights to adaptation and mitigation strategies. The Certificate also examines how the design and governance of AI systems can reduce or amplify risk.
The MSc shifts the focus from understanding disruption to planning and leading organizational adaptation and mitigation strategies. Learners explore how to evaluate, select, and govern AI solutions, weigh AI's capabilities against its limitations, and combine human judgment with AI-driven insight. They also use AI-powered analytics for risk assessment, scenario planning, and stress testing as they design organizational responses and plan their implementation.
Across both programs, the emphasis is on interpreting what AI reveals, understanding its limits, and using it responsibly to make sound decisions.
